A good project manager needs many
skills. Achieving high performance in information technology
projects requires strong management skills, particularly strong
communication, interpersonal, leadership and political skills.
Project managers need strong management skills to understand,
navigate and meet stakeholders’ needs and expectations. They need to
provide the technical leadership and guidance to Project Team.
Besides that, they need to be able to accept other members’
opinions, help develop new approaches for solving problems, and then
persuade others to work toward achieving project goals. Therefore,
the project manager needs to get involve in the development,
integration and the design methodologies to have a better
understanding on what is going on from time to time. Project manager
must also lead their project teams by providing vision, delegating
work, creating an energetic and positive environment, and setting an
example of appropriate and effective behavior. He or she is
responsible for the implementation and successful completion of
projects to meet the performance, cost and objectives. In addition,
project manager is required to have high coping skills, high
motivation skills, resourceful, and flexible.
For our Coding Performance Improvement
Project, the project manager needs to have strong technical
background and knowledge of the Information Technology tools sp that
he or she is able to make effective use of technology as it relates
to the specific project. Project manager must make many decisions
and deal with people in his project team, so it vital for a project
manager to be knowledgeable and confident in using the special tools
or technologies that are the most effective for particular tasks.
The most important characteristics and
behaviors of good project manager are being a team builder and
communicator, demonstrating trust and respect, having high
self-esteem, has strong analytical skills to identify improvement
areas and making proper recommendations. It is also vital for a
project manager to possess strong determination to achieve goals and
targets.
For this Coding Performance Improvement
Project, the person who wants to be the project manager of this
project should possess all the above skills. He or she also must
have a good understanding of the structure, design and problems
faced of the current system and programs of our company. Besides,
this person must also have the desired skills in understanding and
able to maximize the usage of current software and tools in the
company to minimize costs. It is preferable that he or she to have
at least 6 years of experience working as a project manager in other
software projects and possess a Certified Project Manager
certification. The most suitable person to hold the position of
project manager of this Coding Performance Improvement Project is
the project manager or senior executive of the company’s IT
department because they would be the person who is more familiar
with the current system and tools provided.
